Here’s something to think about while you’re drinking your morning coffee. Since SVC stood up over 12 years ago, there have been dozens of convictions under s419 of the Criminal Code of Canada that we’ve played a significant role in. www.stolenvalour.ca
Contrary to popular belief and likely influenced by the largely ineffective US Stolen Valor laws*, Canada’s s419 of the Criminal Code does not require a tangible / financial gain in order to lay charges.
Until 2019 s419 contained a reverse onus provision meaning the individual had to prove their entitlement to medals/insignia, uniforms and documents.
Since the last revision of s419, the reverse onus provision was removed and the “flash to bang time” from the alleged offence to being charged was increased from 6 months to 12 months which provides the authorities the time to conduct a full investigation and obtain military service records.
How the police chose to deal with these files are based on departmental caseloads, higher priority files, budget constraints, lack of knowledge regarding Canada’s “stolen valour law” and crown prosecutor approval.
In our experience, a successful conviction is usually results from tenacious police officers who have legitimate military service and understand the effort required to earn medals and insignia.
Sadly, we’ve had several large police departments tell us that stolen valour was a matter for the Military Police to investigate. Here’s a news flash, it’s not a military issue, unless it occurs within the MP’s very limited jurisdiction.
The vast majority of posers, fakes and embellishers showcased on our platforms are narcissists who stand in the blood of our wounded and fallen. All that matters to these self entitled toe rags is having their egos stroked by a naively appreciative and gullible public. They couldn’t give a rat’s ass about actual service or sacrifice associated with the military themed costumes they wear.
The US perspective on Stolen Valor.
*Under current U.S. law, wearing unearned military medals or devices is generally protected as free speech—as long as the person is not doing so to defraud or profit from the deception.
Here’s the legal journey that led to this:
The Stolen Valor Act of 2006
Originally made it a crime to falsely claim military honors, including wearing medals not earned.
In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court struck it down in United States v. Alvarez, ruling that the law violated the First Amendment. The Court emphasized that false statements alone aren’t criminal unless they cause harm or are used to defraud.
The Revised Stolen Valor Act of 2013
Congress responded by passing a narrower version.
It criminalizes lying about military service only when done to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefits.
Simply wearing medals without having earned them—without intent to profit—is no longer illegalin the US.
They’re out there folks, and they like to tell the most incredible stories.
We’ll call this fella “Matt the Toronto Manure Spreader”.
12 Years of service, including being a Captain in the JTF2. Multiple deployments to Afghanistan. After joining JTF2 he was on notice for deployment anywhere in the world and would never spend more than a couple of weeks on leave. Was in heavy combat operations. Many of his platoon were killed in action.
Killed over 300 people – Insurgents and civilians
Was given the nickname “Reaper” by his platoon because he “enjoyed killing” and was more than happy to kill anyone that moved while on missions.
Matt volunteered for 78% of missions because he had nothing to go home to. The more dangerous the better in his mind. He explained that most soldiers only volunteer for 16% of missions.
Was driving an armoured vehicle in Afghanistan when he hit a IED, flipping the vehicle. His friend was badly injured and he couldn’t help him as they were under sniper fire for 12 hours. His friend died in his arms before help arrived. Claimed that this is the reason he didn’t drive – VAC psychologist took his drivers license away for an indefinite amount of time. In fact he never had a license, only recently obtaining it. Claimed that the psychologist felt that he was doing better and returned his license to him.
Conducted joint missions with the US Navy where he swam out of a submarine torpedo tube
Conducted almost 100 missions via helicopter deployment, rappelled into small arms fire numerous times
While on patrol witnessed a 5 year old boy running towards him with a suicide vest. “It was either me or him, and I’m still here”
Managed to disarm a suicide vest off of several people, including a child
While in command of a mission, he hesitated and one of his soldiers under his command was killed. He asked for permission to inform the widow and was granted a flight to Edmonton where he broke the news to her. She blamed him and he has lived with this guilt for 15 years. To help ease his guilt he has paid her $150,000 mortgage completely out of his own personal funds…
Seven of his friends have committed suicide since returning and he is on constant suicide watch.
Holds the Canadian military record for distance kill via sniper shot when he killed an insurgent in Afghanistan.
Some days he needs to check in with his VAC psychologist every four hours as his PTSD from his deployments have left him suicidal
Claimed that a coworker posed a question if he was one of those soldiers that raped women. Matt became overly emotional to his superiors, required time off from work to deal with his mental health/PTSD. He was given a week off fully PAID to help cope with his PTSD.
The faces of everyone under his command that has died in combat haunts him nightly
On a patrol encountered an entire village where the women had their faces burnt off with acid.
Drove tanks in Afghanistan and because of this was given employment building a replica tank for a movie shoot.
He lays awake at night wondering what happened to the hundreds of women that he saved from Human traffickers.
On weekends he goes to the VAC and blows off steam with other veterans. VAC gave him a sponsor to talk to when he felt suicidal.
Stolen Valour Canada was advised by a number of parties that there was a potential issue with the medal that HABETLER was photographed wearing at the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Lloydminster, Sk.
Prior to investing any research effort into what has the potential to become a wild goose chase, we contact named individuals in order to provide them with an opportunity to sort out the reported situation. SVC does not act upon unsubstantiated intelligence or malicious tips, and we hoped that Sir Brent would take advantage of this offer to assist in protecting his reputation.
SVC asked him via his email using his verified email account on 17 October 2019 to contact us over a sensitive situation.
His one word response – NO!
Sir Knight appears to have some sort of royal access to CLAWR that accompanied his “knighthood”
Our brave knight produced the following documents as proof of service, not exactly convincing….
Mr HABETLER, do everyone a favour, put your military themed trinkets back into your tickle trunk and stop telling fairy tales of make believe army career! Your foolishness is nothing but an insult to our wounded and fallen.
UPDATED
Video of “Sir Brent” has now surfaced documenting his antics at the Alberta Legislature (16 Oct 2021). In his latest scam, our brave knight claims to be the “Queen’s Representative” and will negotiate on behalf of First Nations with his third cousin, Queen Elizabeth II…
He must have left his fancy gold rope, his bogus documentation and the fake Canadian Forces Decoration in his tickle trunk of military fairy tales.

Brent Habetler, who legally changed his name to Sir Brent Adair Habetler, was arrested in March and charged with committing an indecent act in a public place.
A Saskatchewan man entered into a 12-month peace bond on Wednesday not to be at any swimming pool, daycare, day school, or youth centre.
Brent Habetler, who legally changed his name to Sir Brent Adair Habetler, was arrested in March and charged with committing an indecent act in a public place, and willfully obstructing, interrupting or interfering with the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property, the community swimming pool, thereby committing mischief. Those charges were withdrawn in Lloydminster, Alta., court on Nov. 15.
In March, Saskatchewan RCMP said that in the interest of public safety, they were advising the residents of the Maidstone RCMP detachment area and surrounding communities of an offender who had been charged with committing an indecent act and the RCMP said that he was at high risk to reoffend.
Back in 2000, Habetler was arrested in Prince George for two counts of indecent exposure, one at a drivethru restaurant and the other at the Elksentre.
Police at the time said they had witnesses who could prove Habetler, who was then 23-years-old, was responsible for the acts. However, one charge was later dropped and Habetler was acquitted of the other.
